June 18—28, 2017
We will have a glorious opportunity to bask in the sights, tastes, and feel of life as we discover eleven magnificent ports of call in the Mediterranean!
June 18 Barcelona, Spain
One of Europe’s most visually stunning cities, Barcelona balances the medieval intimacy of its Gothic Quarter with the grace and distinction of the wide boulevards in the Eixample which is home to most of Barcelona’s Art Nouveau masterpieces and a gorgeous residential and shopping area. Barcelona was the home of architect Antoni Gaudí, whose Sagrada Familia Cathedral, Park Güell and Casa Milà are the most profound statements of Modernism. View the splendid works at the Picasso Museum and the Miro Foundation, discover Barcelona’s extraordinary cuisine, and the passionate ambiance of a flamenco show
June 19 Valencia, Spain
Valencia was established by the Greeks and later occupied by the Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths and Arabs. A 15th century artistic movement here gave the world spectacular paintings, sculptures, and jewels. Today a “City of Arts and Sciences,” Valencia offers remarkable modern architecture alongside notable classics such as the 13th century Cathedral and Chapel of the Holy Chalice. You can take in the Quart Towers, a former gate of the medieval wall, built in 1444; and for a great culinary experience enjoy a paella in Valencia!
June 20 Palma de Mallorca, Spain
Mallorca, also known as Majorca, is a gorgeous island with steep jagged cliffs and olive groves that are more than a thousand years old. To the south is a busy tourist area with hotels, bars, restaurants, shopping, and dazzling nightlife. To the north are rocky valleys, breathtaking views, and quiet villages shrouded in bougainvillea. Palma is dominated by a Gothic Cathedral located high above the waterfront on the site of a former mosque.
June 21 Palamos, Spain
June 22 Provence (Marseille), France
Experience the Costa Brava and understand why Salvador Dalí and other artists have long been inspired by its beaches and coves. Spend a day in the warm sand of La Fosca, learn about the history of this fishing village in the Museu de la Pesca, or take in the Mediterranean air while strolling the promenade. Just an hour north of the city, you can visit the extraordinary Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres. The museum has major works from Dali’s adolescence to the last years of his life.
Marseille is a far cry from the sleepy village that once inspired Cézanne’s paintings. Now with more than a million people, Marseille remains the cosmopolitan, exuberant capital of southern Europe. It is known for its picturesque Old Quarter, lively sidewalk cafes and shops, and Romanesque-Byzantine Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica overlooking steep cliffs and offering a bird’s eye view of the city’s colorful “quartiers” stretching down towards the sea.
June 23 Monte Carlo, Monaco
Tiny, but packed with glamour and fun, Monte Carlo offers a combination of history, beauty, entertainment, and leisure. The wealthiest spot in Monaco, Monte Carlo is an enchanting place, known as the international capital of luxury and for its celebrity-sightings, casinos, and nightlife. The old world still shines through in Monte Carlo’s art and architecture, palaces, cathedrals, and museums. Be sure to catch the once-daily changing of the guard and tour the public areas at the Palais du Prince which is home to the royal family and once the residence of the famous actress Grace Kelly.
June 24 Antibes, France
Alluring Antibes has sleek multi-million dollar yachts bobbing in its brilliant blue Mediterranean harbor, ancient cobblestone streets, and a jewel-like setting on the Cote d’Azur. Stroll through gorgeous gardens and then explore Fort Carré dating back to the 16th Century. Take in the Picasso Museum located in the Grimaldi Chateau, the historic home of Monaco’s royal family. Browse through the town’s beloved open market filled with gourmet offerings harvested from land and sea. The Old Town is alive with colorful flowers, trendy boutiques, galleries and restaurants. Look for original artwork and designer clothing, enjoy delicious seafood, Provencal specialties, and perhaps a sip of local Absinthe in picture perfect surroundings.
June 25 Cinque Terre (La Spezia), Italy
Head out of town and discover five stunning, colorful towns clinging to the cliffs along the coast. Hike along the trail connecting the towns, or take a boat tour and see them from the water as ancient seafarers did. Go ashore and explore a picturesque town and its castle. Or visit intriguing Porto Venere, another town rising above one end of La Spezia's harbor with breathtaking views and the lovely Church of San Pietro. Cinque Terre has been a playground and inspiration for poets from Dante to Byron and Shelly.
June 26 Porto Veccio (Corsica), France
Delve into the relaxed, chic style of Porto Vecchio with its ancient walled town perched high above pristine beaches and surrounded by lush mountains. Visit the citadel ruins throughout the town, and two restored fortresses, the Bastion San Antonia and the Bastion de France. Don’t miss the impressive Church of Saint Jean-Baptiste with its stained glass windows and frescoes. Select a café or restaurant with a stunning view – there are many lining the narrow cobblestone streets – and enjoy the famous Corsican cuisine, a delicious fusion of Italian and French. Shop for designer clothing, famous wild boar sausages, and Corsican wine.
June 27 Florence/Pisa/Tuscany (Livorno), Italy
Livorno, located in the center of Tuscany, is the gateway to the glory of Renaissance Florence and Pisa. From the 13th to 16th centuries, this area of creative freedom encouraged the genius of Dante, Donatello, Michelangelo, Giotto, Botticelli, da Vinci, and Machiavelli to create some of the world’s most important masterpieces.
